Some 45 years have come and gone since many of us first met
Many of our lives have changed a lot, but we still don't choose to forget
The barren sands of Africa, the mud and mountains of Italy
We can also include France and Germany and the loss of lives we regret
The memories stay with us and will probably stay 'till the end
You can't just call them good soldiers, for each was a very good friend
The sound of war is in the land
The spilling of blood is close at hand
A sense of fear haunts everyone
But there is little hope until the deed is done
Historians will debate the value of war
But not those families that find death at their door
